What Is a Gel Mattress? What Gel Foam Does and Does Not Do

Gel foam is memory foam with a gel material mixed in or laid over it. The claim is that it sleeps cooler. The truthful version: it absorbs heat for longer before it warms up, which is not the same as staying cool all night.

How it works

Gel has a higher thermal mass than foam, so it takes more energy to raise its temperature. Lie down and heat flows from you into the gel rather than building up at the surface, and the mattress feels cool to the touch and for the first part of the night.

What happens next is the part nobody advertises. Once the gel has absorbed as much heat as it can hold, it stops taking any more, and the mattress behaves like the memory foam it is. In an insulated bed under a duvet there is nowhere for that heat to go. Most people who overheat overheat in the small hours, which is exactly when the gel has saturated.

The three forms it comes in

  • Gel beads mixed through the foam. The most common, and the weakest effect.
  • A gel layer laminated on top of the foam. Stronger initial cooling, and it can feel firmer.
  • Gel pods or a gel grid. Structural rather than infused; different product and a different price.

What works better, if temperature is your problem

In order of how much difference they make:

  1. Get a spring unit under you. The air inside a pocket or coil unit is the largest ventilated volume in any mattress.
  2. Natural fillings. Wool regulates in both directions; horsehair is hollow and ventilates while it supports.
  3. Latex. Open-celled and pinned through, so air moves. Several degrees cooler than memory foam, and it does not saturate.
  4. Then, and only then, gel or a conductive cover.

The full argument is in choosing a mattress if you sleep hot.

Is it worth paying extra for?

A modest premium on a mattress you like anyway: reasonable. A large premium justified mainly by the word "cooling": no. And a gel comfort layer on a solid foam base is close to pointless, because the base has no airflow to carry the heat away.

Why we do not sell one

Being straight about it: we do not currently make a gel mattress. Our answer to sleeping hot is latex, natural fillings, and putting the comfort layer over springs rather than over foam — because those work for the whole night rather than the first hour. If gel is specifically what you want, that is a fair reason to buy elsewhere.

Common questions

Does gel foam last as long as ordinary memory foam?

Broadly yes; durability comes from density, not from the gel.

Does a gel topper work?

Same physics on a smaller scale. A latex topper does more for heat.

Is "cooling" a regulated claim?

No. There is no standard behind it, which is why the word appears on so many products.
