Custom Size Mattresses: How Made to Measure Actually Works
A made-to-measure mattress is not a special order that goes to a different workshop. It is the same production line, the same fillings and the same fire certification as everything else we make — cut to your numbers instead of to a British Standard size.
What we can make
| Dimension | Range |
|---|---|
| Width | 40 cm to 300 cm |
| Length | 60 cm to 300 cm |
| Depth | 10 cm to 20 cm |
Anything inside that box is a plain rectangle and costs the same as the nearest standard size in the same specification. Non-rectangles carry a surcharge, and the surcharge is shown on the configurator before you order — nothing appears later.
The shapes
- Rectangle. No surcharge. Any width and length in the range.
- Corner cut. One corner taken off at an angle. The usual answer for a bed that has to clear a door swing, a radiator or a chimney breast.
- Radiused corners. Rounded rather than square. Common on French and sleigh frames.
- Tapered or boat berth. Wider at the head than the foot. Almost every forward berth on a boat is this shape.
- Round. Made to a diameter.
- Cut-out. A notch taken out of an edge, for a post, a pipe or a bulkhead.
If the shape is not on that list, send a sketch. We have cut stranger things.
What is inside it
You choose the foam grade and the depth; the build is the same one we use across the standard range. Four grades, from a firm reflex core through to a memory or cooling gel comfort layer. Covers are a removable knit as standard, with a Tencel cooling cover as an option.
Every custom mattress carries the same permanent BS 7177 Schedule 7 label as the rest of the range. That is not optional and it is not something we can leave off on request — it is the law for any mattress sold in the UK.
How long it takes
Four to seven working days in the factory, then delivery. A standard mattress ordered at the same time ships separately and usually arrives first — that is shown in the basket rather than sprung on you at the door.
The one real difference: returns
This is the part worth reading twice. A mattress cut to your measurements cannot be resold, so it sits outside the 100-night trial that covers the standard range. If it arrives faulty we replace it; if you measured wrong, we cannot take it back.
That is why we would rather spend ten minutes on your numbers than take the order quickly. Read how to measure your bed first, and if anything is not a plain rectangle, send us the sketch and we will check it before anything is cut.
Common questions
Is a custom size more expensive than a standard one?
Not for a rectangle. The price comes from the area and the specification, the same as any other mattress. Shapes carry a surcharge because they take longer to cut and produce more offcut.
Can you match a mattress I already have?
Send the measurements of the frame, not of the old mattress — old mattresses spread. If you want the same feel, tell us what you like and dislike about it rather than the brand name.
Can I get a custom topper too?
Yes. Measure the mattress it will sit on, not the frame.
Do you make custom bedding?
No. For a non-standard mattress you will usually need a deep fitted sheet with plenty of stretch, or bedding made by a specialist.
Price your size on the configurator — it draws the cut sheet as you type.
