Mattress Topper vs Mattress Pad vs Protector
A topper changes how the bed feels. A pad adds a thin layer of padding and some protection. A protector protects and nothing else. Only the topper is thick enough to alter the sleeping surface.

What a topper actually does
Four centimetres is roughly the point at which a layer starts changing the surface rather than just sitting on it. Below that you feel the mattress through it; above it, you feel the topper.
Toppers are worth buying in three situations:
- The mattress has gone too firm for you. Common after a few years, and common when someone buys "orthopaedic" because they were told firm is good for backs.
- You cannot change the mattress. Rented flats, holiday lets, spare rooms, student halls.
- You want to test a direction before committing. A reversible topper with a soft and a firm face is the cheapest way to find out which way your next mattress should go. Ours is the Duo Top.
What a topper cannot do
This is the honest part. A topper changes the surface, not the support underneath it.
- It will not fix a sag. If there is a dip in the middle of the mattress, a topper follows the dip. You will sleep in the same hollow, slightly softer.
- It will not fix a broken spring unit. Same reason.
- It will not make a too-soft mattress supportive. A firm topper on a soft mattress gives you a firm crust over a soft middle, which most people find worse than either.
If the mattress sags, the mattress is finished. A topper is money spent on delaying that conversation.
Choosing between memory foam and latex
Memory foam contours slowly and holds warmth. Latex springs back at once and runs cooler. If you turn over a lot in the night, latex; if you want to sink in and stay, memory foam. Same thickness, quite different nights.

Do you need a protector as well?
Yes, and it is the cheapest useful thing in this article. A stain on the mattress itself is the most common reason a guarantee claim gets turned down across the whole industry — ours included. A cotton protector costs less than a takeaway and removes that argument entirely. Put it over the topper, not under it.
Common questions
Does a topper void the mattress guarantee?
Not with us. A protector between the topper and the mattress is a good idea regardless.
Will the topper slide around?
Ours have elastic corner straps. On a very slippery quilted surface, a fitted sheet stretched over both the topper and the mattress holds everything together better than the straps alone.
Can I get a topper cut to a custom size?
Yes — the same made-to-measure process as the mattresses. Tell us the size of the mattress it sits on, not the frame.
